ONVIF’s TLS Configuration Add-on 2.0: What CCTV Buyers Should Ask

Development announced: 9 September 2026. Status at this review: release candidate. ONVIF has published a draft of its TLS Configuration Add-on 2.0, intended to strengthen how compatible security devices and video management systems establish encrypted communication.

ONVIF says it expects the final specification at the end of 2026. That is an anticipated release, not a completed standard or a guarantee that a camera currently on sale supports it. Read ONVIF’s announcement.

What is changing?

The announcement describes stronger protection methods and an approach in which security requirements can evolve through versioned add-ons. These complement ONVIF profiles; an add-on does not replace the product’s underlying profile conformance.

For a business planning a CCTV purchase, this is a useful prompt to ask more precise questions about system security. A broad statement that equipment is “ONVIF compatible” does not explain which profiles and features the proposed camera and management platform share.

• Ask for the exact camera, recorder or management-software models and firmware versions in the proposal.
• Request confirmation of the security functions supported by both sides of the connection.
• Distinguish features available now from items on a manufacturer’s roadmap.
• Include ownership of updates, administrator accounts and remote access in the handover.

Should you replace an existing system now?

This announcement alone is not a reason to replace working equipment. A more useful starting point is the condition and support status of your current system, the way people access it and the requirements of your next upgrade.

For example, a site can review who holds administrator access, which devices are still supported and whether its equipment inventory is accurate while a new specification is being finalised. Those checks also help an installer assess future options without relying on a product label alone.

When evaluating an upgrade, ask the supplier to demonstrate the proposed camera and recorder combination. Record the tested features and agreed maintenance responsibilities so the installation has a clear baseline for future support.
