Choosing CCTV for Night-Time Coverage in Durban

A bright camera image is reassuring, but it is not the same as useful evidence. Before choosing CCTV for a Durban home, office or commercial site, decide what you need to see after dark: a person approaching an entrance, activity along a boundary or detail at a particular access point.

Start with a purpose for each camera

Mark the areas that matter on a simple site plan. For each view, write down the purpose and the approximate distance to the subject. A wide overview may help you understand movement across a yard, while a separate view may be needed for useful detail at the door.

Avoid choosing every camera on megapixel count alone. Position, lens choice, angle, available light and the subject’s movement all affect the result. Ask the installer to explain what each proposed camera is expected to show.

Colour at night and infrared solve different problems

Low-light colour cameras can preserve useful colour information when the scene provides enough suitable light, sometimes with supplemental illumination. Infrared cameras commonly provide black-and-white night images. Neither label guarantees a clear image of a moving subject in your particular scene.

Exposure settings involve a trade-off: extending exposure can brighten an image, while movement during that exposure can blur detail. Manufacturer guidance, such as Axis’s camera documentation, explains this balance. Test a person walking through the actual scene rather than judging only a still image.

A short night-time acceptance checklist

• Walk through the area at a normal pace and review the recording.
• Check the entrance with its usual lights switched on and off.
• Look for glare from nearby lights, reflective surfaces or vehicle headlights.
• Confirm that trees, walls and roof edges do not dominate the illumination.
• Check camera time, playback, exporting and the image seen by authorised remote users.

If identifying vehicle number plates is a requirement, discuss that explicitly at design stage. A general overview camera should not be assumed to deliver reliable plate detail in every lighting and movement condition.

Plan recording and support alongside the cameras

Decide how long you want recordings available and which cameras need continuous recording. Storage requirements change with camera count, image settings, bitrate, scene activity and the recording schedule. The final proposal should identify the assumptions used, and the configured system should be checked after installation.

Include the recorder, network equipment and relevant power supplies when discussing backup power. Protecting only the recorder will not keep a separately powered camera or network switch working.

Use your assessment to compare quotations fairly
