OpenAI’s DevDay 2026 made one direction very clear: artificial intelligence is moving beyond answering questions and toward taking ongoing responsibility for real work.
At the event, OpenAI announced more than 20 updates across ChatGPT, Codex, its model line-up and developer platform. The most important shift for businesses is the growing emphasis on AI agents that can keep working across tools, files and workflows rather than waiting for a new prompt every time.
Always-on agents are becoming a business tool
One of the headline announcements was Dots, described by OpenAI as always-on agents designed to handle ongoing responsibilities. Rather than behaving like a normal chatbot session, these agents are intended to stay connected to the work that matters to a user or business and continue operating in the background.
OpenAI also introduced GPT-6.1 Sol, positioned as a major upgrade for agentic coding, computer use and professional work. Alongside it came improvements to Codex, cloud development environments, code review, security tooling and an expanded Agents API.
Why this matters for companies
The practical impact is less about having a “smarter chatbot” and more about changing how routine work is handled. An AI agent can potentially monitor an inbox, prepare reports, move information between systems, assist with customer enquiries, update records, trigger workflows and escalate only the cases that need human attention.
That is particularly important for SMEs, where administrative work often sits with the same people responsible for sales, operations and customer service. Well-designed automation can reduce repetitive tasks without forcing a business to replace the systems it already uses.
Computer use opens another layer of automation
OpenAI also highlighted computer-use capabilities in its Agents API. This allows developers to build agents that can interact with software interfaces, use tools and coordinate sub-agents as part of longer workflows.
For businesses, this points toward a future where automation is no longer limited to systems that have perfect API integrations. With the correct permissions, safeguards and oversight, AI can increasingly work across the same applications employees already use.
Zapture’s view: the opportunity is in connected workflows
The strongest AI implementations will not come from installing a chatbot and hoping for the best. They will come from identifying a repeatable process, deciding where human approval is necessary, and connecting the right systems around that process.
That is the approach Zapture is taking with AI automation: practical solutions such as AI receptionists, enquiry handling, lead qualification, workflow automation and website integrations that are tailored to the way a business already operates.
As agent technology matures, the competitive advantage will increasingly belong to companies that understand their processes well enough to automate them safely and intelligently.
